Added more earthworks to the ranch. This time I put a swale in as the first phase of my orchard. A swale is basically a ditch on contour. Â The idea being that runoff acclimates in the ditch and slowly infiltrates the soil instead of running off. The added depth of topsoil and moisture retention is ideal for trees. I took it one step further and had my greywater system plumbed into it so that it gets an extra dose of water every time we take a shower or run a load of laundry. I planted 3 peach trees, 4 apple trees, and a plum tree on the berm.
